Mount Hkakabo Razi
Hkakabo Razi (Burmese: ) is Southeast Asia's highest mountain, located in the northern Myanmar state of Kachin. The peak is enclosed within Hkakabo Razi National Park. It is entirely mountainous and is characterized by broad-leaved evergreen rain forest, a sub-tropical temperate zone from 8,000 ft. —9,000 ft. (2,438 m to 2,743 m), then broad-leaved, semi-deciduous forest and finally needle-leaved evergreen, snow forest. Above 11,000 ft. (3,353 m) the highest forest zone is alpine, different not only in kind from the forest, but different in history and origin. Still higher up, around 15,000 ft. (4,572 m), cold, barren, windswept terrain and permanent snow and glaciers dominate. At around 17,500 ft. (5,334 m), there is a large ice cap with several outlet glaciers.
Hkakabo Razi was established as a natural reserve on January 30, 1996 and as a National Park on November 10, 1998. The park is the last stronghold for biodiversity in Myanmar. Extraordinarily rich flora and fauna, ranging from lowland tropical to alpine species still await proper research and identification. They have barely been studied, and the park remains an excellent center for field study for students of botany, geology, zoology and geography. The latest study was done by the Forest Department with the assistance of Wildlife Conservation Society of New York during 1997 and 1998. The results have been presented in ICIMOD sponsored Workshop “Sub-regional Consultation on Conservation of Hkakabo Razi Mountain Ecosystems in Eastern Himalayas”, held in Putao, Myanmar during October 25—29, 1999.
The region will shortly be opened to the general public through eco-tourism by the Myanmar authorities. The government is collecting information for development in that regard and a number of scientific expeditions have been already accepted in the region.

Mt. Hkakabo Razi (picture below), Myanmar’s and South East Asia’s highest peak at 5,900 meters, is located in the northern most reaches of Kachin State. The mountain was conquered for the first time in 1997 by a team of Japanese and Myanmar climbers. The closest town is Putao, a small, quiet place, surrounded by snow-capped mountains stretching from Tibet in the north-west.

 | is this true??? how come Malaysia government call Mount KK is the highest in South East Asia? Or Mynamar is not consider south east asia??
bryan |
 | i think Myanmar, under Junta government is not part of SEA |
 | this is something new. tfs bro. Myanmar is on headline news for the past week. it's chaotic there. Govt keep shooting on its people. let's pray for the best for them. |
 | Funny!!. . . . Perhaps the location is considered under South Asia group together with Tibet and India. . . . |
 | Navigating Apac,
I can't answer your question. |
 | leongwk wrote on Oct 2, '07, edited on Oct 2, '07 Could it be the method of measuring the height of the mountain?
Mt Kinabalu was measured from the sea level. I am not sure is that this mount was measured from the base of the ocean. |
 | upinz wrote on Oct 3, '07 Why Papua New Guinea is not in south east asia while Irian Jaya is part if SEA. On Papua New Guinea, there's a Mt. Wilhelm that is 4509m... |

 | leongwk wrote on Oct 3, '07, edited on Oct 3, '07 A mountain is an elevation in the earth's surface. The elevation, or altitude, of a mountain is given as the height of the summit above sea level. Mountains are much bigger than hills. Most of the time they are made up elongated ranges. It is rare when a mountain stands alone.
What is the difference between tallest and highest? Tallest: the top is the furthest away from the base. Highest: the top is the furthest away from sea level.
There are three ways of measuring the height of a mountain. So which mountain is the tallest? One way to measure a mountain is by measuring from sea level. The second way is by measuring from base to peak. The third way is by measuring the distance from the center of the earth to the peak of the mountain.

There is a Mount Call Mt Wilhelm 4509M, and now another mountain call Kakabo Razi 5881M at Kachin State Myanmar. actually Kinabalu is the 2nd runner up in SEA. However, it is the most famous and make most money among the 3 highest. If Papua clasify as Oceania (Aus, NZ, Fiji,.....), then KK is runner up after K Razi. aslo not best maa. Before 1993 this area (Hkakabo Razi ) was not accessable to foreigners. The first recorded attempt at the peak was made in 1995 by Takashai Ozaki, from Japan. He failed due to persistent bad weather. A year later he returned, and this time succeeded. |
 | Yes, apparently Mount Kinabalu is not the highest mountain in SEA. Although Hkakabo Razi is the highest, is not easily accessible to men. That is why I wrote Mount Kinabalu is "the highest climber-friendly mountain" in SEA. http://www.mount-kinabalu-borneo.comThe same true for Wilhelmina. |
 | i though i already visited to the highest peak in SEA. Actually not yet....leongwk , how about organize a trip to Hkakabo Razi. |
 | Chow, Never thought of going to Hkakabo Razi.... It's risky to life, you may say I'm affraid of death. Ever heard of ppl climbed to Everest and lost their fingers and toes beside many kind of illnesses... |
 | Regarding to the valuable information provided in these forum, people may have a clear understanding and thought about the position of Mount Kinabalu in SEA highest mountain. I'm agreed that these mountain is the extremely climber-friendly and it's an ideal first mountain for novice mountain climbers to conquer. I remembered when my very first time to climb these mountain, the height was 4101m back in 1993. I believe the sea level has been increasing from day to day due to the global warming issue. Anyway, am glad to achieve these goal as "I came, I saw, and I conquered" Check out these link of someone research on "what is the tallest mountain in SEA?" http://bisean.blogspot.com/2007/08/10-tallest-mountains-in-southeast-asia.htmlThanks for everyone sharing here. |
 | haha... you have to realise that kinabalu mount is still the highest... kinabalu mount high is calculated based on above sea level and make it as the highest mountain in southeast asia...... different with the Mount Hkakabo Razi...it high is calculate based on under sea level... this blog are ridicoules..... think b4 say something that is are really not true....

 | Here to answer all of you;
1) Hkakabo razi (myanmmar) - from the range of himalaya (South Asia not South EAST Asia) 2) Puncak Jaya (Indon, Papua) - from the range of Bishmack (Oceania)
*Kinabalu (Sabah, Malaysia) - from the range of Crocker (Within the boundary of Sabah)
so the mt. Kinabalu located 100% in Malaysia not like both Hkakabo and Puncak Jaya. Hence, THE HIGHEST IS MOUNT KINABALU.
